DBS Checks and Working with Juniors
From 1 September 2026, changes under the Crime and Policing Act 2026 removed the supervision exemption for regulated activity involving children. This means that being supervised by a qualified coach no longer exempts someone from DBS requirements if their role involves regulated activity.
Activities that may require a check include:
- Coaching, teaching or instructing juniors.
- Supervising juniors during club sessions.
- Regularly providing technical instruction, including unsolicited advice, even without a formal coaching role.
The type of check required depends on the role and whether it meets the criteria for regulated activity. The frequency of the activity also matters, so please refer to the regulated activity infographic for specific requirements.
